Glass has been used for more than a century for its elegance and or its transparency. The mechanical properties, especially its resistance to impact, were improved through toughened or laminated glass.
It made it suitable for safety applications in for example buildings, vehicles, housings. Toughened glass results from a rapid cooling of glass plates which traps tension stresses in the glass volume and compression stresses at the surface of the glass Toughened glass is also used because it breaks into small, smooth and thus less dangerous pieces. However, these glass are not suitable for impact resistance. Laminated glass is a different story. It is made of an elastomeric interlayer sandwiched in between two glass plates and increase the performance to impact. The adhesion between the glass and the interlayer furthermore prevent glass shattered into pieces and flying around, it prevent injuries when a glass wall or a windshield is impacted. Finally, laminated glass will keep the structural integrity of the glass plate, which is of special interest in some extreme conditions such as hurricane. Safety and security are important reasons for the development of high-strength glass/plastic laminates for both civilian and military applications. TPU Krystalflex interlayer for example has major applications include: Government buildings, hotels, manufacturing plants, banks, embassies and consulates, retail stores, corporate office centers, prisons. Interlayers are widely recognized as the preferred material for laminated glass which makes modern buildings safe and secure, attractive and comfortable to live in, as well as respectful of the environment.
The inventor of laminated glass was Édouard Bénédictus, a French artist. (1878- 1930). It started in 1903, as he dropped a glass flask containing a cellulose based glue. The flask presented cracks in the glass but the whole structure remained. The glass still stuck together. In his Lab he experimented with several glass types and liquid plastic. And the beginning of laminated glass found its way into the market. Ford started to use safety glass in their cars and many years later it became a standard in their vehicles. Before that it was used in the lenses for military masks (beginning of the first world war). Several patents where written. The film where upgraded and commercialized. In the 40/50’s PVB was created. PVB is still a common used interlayer for laminated glass. But the purpose and application grew and so the type of interlayers with their own authentic characteristics.
What is laminated glass ?
laminated glass is held in place by an interlayer between 2 or more layers of glass. The type of glass can be normal float glass, tempered glass, colored glass, coated glass, flat or bended glass.
Laminated glass has higher impact resistance than an ordinary sheet glass. If the laminated glass breaks, the glass fragments remain stuck to the plastic film. Laminated glass is applied to most buildings to avoid any dangerous accidents because of its strong anti-shocking and anti-break-in abilities. The film in the middle becomes a "glue" when heated and pressed together and is able to resist hammers or the penetration of bullets for a certain period of time, so it is of high security level. Laminated glass is used when high impact is needed such as hurricane proof, bullet resistance, or where the glass could fall if shattered and also for architectural applications.
